On Thursday, Feb. 29, a school bus transporting students from the Nishuane School was heading north on Norwood Avenue and stopped at the intersection at Norman Road, Lt. Terence Turner of the Montclair police said.

The school bus had its stop sign out and lights activated when a white SUV driven by Steven Ruiz-Santana passed the it, Turner said.

A 53-year-old Montclair man stopped the SUV and the two men "exchanged words," Turner said.

Ruiz-Santana then left his car and punched the 53-year-old in the face, Turner said. Ruiz-Santana left the scene before officers arrived, Turner said. The 53-year-old was taken to a nearby hospital, Turner said.

Ruiz-Santana was charged with assault on Thursday, March 14, Turner said. He is due back in court in May.
